The Spring 2008 Anime Preview Guide ( 4 )

Macross Frontier
by Theron Martin

Rating: 4.5 (of 5)

NOTE: Although this episode actually premiered back in December as a series preview, this is its first airing in its regular schedule. This review is based on the recently-aired version.

Review: The year is 2059, several decades after the defining Earth-Zentradi War. Taking its impetus from that devastating conflict, mankind has spread out across the stars, with the 25th Emigration Fleet (aka Macross Frontier) headed towards the center of the galaxy. During a performance by top idol singer Sheryl Nome an enemy attacks, forcing Altoh, a flight student assisting in the concert, into desperate action.

The 25th anniversary addition to the venerable Macross franchise, Frontier naturally has the complicated space/aerial battles, transforming fighter craft, and idol singer involvement that typify most Macross series, but this one spruces up the franchise for a whole new generation of fans by delivering spectacular displays of the very latest in 3D CG visuals and animation. The cast of characters introduced so far, and the situations they're thrown into, may be typical, but the level of execution is not. How many other sci fi anime series have this level of convincing futuristic feel? How many others show the imagination to offer something as thoroughly innovative as Ranka's cell phone design? How many would have the nerve to make an idol singer conceited and bitchy? And how many achieve the level of tension in battles that this one does? A powerhouse musical score certainly helps, but it is hardly the only thing this series has in its favor.

Despite a vast incongruity in visual quality between the character renderings/animation and the rest of the visuals, Satelight (look for a hidden reference in the anime) has another winner on its hands here. This could be the “series to see” for this season. Be forewarned, however, that this one does get a bit bloody.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Kure-nai
Rating: 5 (of 5)
Genre: Romance, Comedy

Review: The best series aren't necessarily the flashiest, and that certainly holds true with Kure-nai. Despite having its own very distinct visual style, it packs nowhere near the visual pizzazz of, say, Macross Frontier. What it offers instead is a subdued, earthy, mature look, a (gasp!) even-tempered teenage hero with woman troubles, and fantastically involving writing and storytelling. That not all of the details are clear at this point does not detract from how exceptionally well-constructed this first episode is.

In this story, teenaged Kure-nai Shinkurou is a Mediator, a sort of freelance enforcer who apparently has some kind of special body. Though he attends school like any normal teenager, he gets thrown for a loop by an assignment to protect Kuhoin Murasaki, a six-year-old rich girl who has been cloistered away since birth but has decided to leave her former home. For her protection she must stay in Kure-nai's dingy apartment, a prospect initially difficult for both of them.

As typical as the above summary may sound, nothing is typical in execution about this series. Neither Kure-nai nor Kuhoin fall into any easily-definable archetypes, and while Kuhoin may be cute enough in appearance, her disposition doesn't match. In fact, none of the character look, act, or sound anything like what you may be used to seeing in anime. For its style, it offers some great artistry and a perfectly complementary musical score which includes a unique-looking opener and closer.

This one is quite a ways off the beaten path, ladies and gents, but that should only give you further reason to check it out. While it may be premature to make such a claim, based on the first episode alone this one has the potential to be one of the year's best.
---------------------------------------------------------
To Love-Ru

Rating: 3 (of 5)
Genre: Romance, Fantasy, Comedy, Ecchi

Review: Tell me if you've heard this one before: gorgeous alien babe comes to Earth, falls in with a human teenager, falls in love with him, and through a contrivance involving cultural differences misinterprets an unrelated comment as a marriage proposal (often as an excuse to avoid an arranged marriage). In some iteration this scenario has played out repeatedly in anime ever since Urusei Yatsura back in the early '80s. The scary thing is that it comes very close to working here.

Oh, don't get me wrong: this has all the signs of being yet another trashy exercise in teen male wish fulfillment. Just to make sure it has its priorities straight, it even takes time to focus on some breast jiggling in the middle of an early sci-fi action scene, and its opener graphics are almost pure fan service. Other opportunities pop up throughout the episode, too, and the male lead Yuki Rito is as annoyingly girl-shy as ever.

However, this one stands at least a small step above most of its ilk because it's actually genuinely funny. The obstacles that arise to thwart Yuki in his efforts to confess to his long-time love Haruna will make almost anyone laugh, the late encounter with Zastin is suitably ridiculous, and it looks as if sexpot Lala may actually have a personality beyond just being adorably cute. Other more subtle signs also suggest that there may be a glimmer of hope for this series. Good artistry, nice character designs for Lala, Haruna, and Yuki's sister, and an active musical score featuring a strong opener don't hurt.

Yeah, this one's strictly for the guys, but at least it has potential.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Vampire Knight

Rating: 3.5 (of 5)
Genre: Shoujo, Romance, Fantasy, Drama

Review: What would an anime TV season be without at least one vampire series? Last season Rosario to Vampire offered a decidedly shonen-oriented look at vampires and monsters, so this time around we have something aimed more at the ladies, something which possesses all of the style, humor, and elegance you would expect from a shojo vampire tale. Thankfully this one also seems to actually have a brain.

As a little girl, Yuuki Cross was attacked by a bloodthirsty vampire but save by a more handsome, noble one named Kaname. Ten years later, Yuuki and her foster brother Zero serve as Prefects at Cross Academy, assuring that the (human) Day Class does not mix with the (secretly vampire) Night Class, who are testing a new blood pill. Though Yuuki seeks a peaceful coexistence with the Kaname-led vampires, Zero is more embittered towards them, and the simple reality is that some vampires are still dangerous blood-suckers.

The premise seems a bit contrived, but the story execution actually works remarkably well, hitting just the right shade of serious tone – most of the time, anyway. The attempts at humor, unfortunately, do not work so well; in fact, the ones in this episode are not only numbingly stupid but also disruptive of the overall feel established in more serious moments. (That is, in fact, the only reason the first episode is being rated so low; those who actually found the humor funny can consider this a 4 instead.) Hopefully the series will either eventually learn to integrate it in better or dispense with it altogether.

With strong artistry, an appropriate musical score, and a quite cool closer (the final shot is a masterpiece) in its favor, this Studio DEEN production shows serious potential.

Kyo Kara Maoh! Season 3 Premiering in April

I wonder how many have watched KKM. It was introduced to me by my good friend who watched it on cabletv some time back. Being attracted by the storyline and the phrase “shuai ges” which means good-looking guys, how can I not watch it?

After watching the first few episodes, I totally plunged into the world of KKM!

For those who have not watched or even heard of this series, it talks about an average high schooler, Shibuya Yuuri, who got sucked into the other world, where water is the medium of travel between the real and foreign worlds. Yuuri tried to help his friend Ken Murata who was bullied by a bunch of bullies but got targetted instead. He was dragged into the female washroom where the bullies attempted to flush his head into the toilet bowl =.=

It’s never too late! 3rd Season is starting soon

L Movie: Change the World

I caught the L Movie last night with my other half. Sad to say, it wasn’t really up to my expectations. Sure this is a spinoff, the final tale to the remaining 23 days that L had. So no Light was involved, and no deathnote? T_T It was practically something like another story, that didn’t involved deathnotes at all. To think that I hoped that there would be more deathnote action!

Spoilers and thoughts are included. Read at your own risk! =X

What I didn’t like about the movie

1. Watari died too early
2. Too many alphabet names of people, K, F, etc.
3. L was helpless in some parts of the movie
4. L burnedd the deathnote early in the movie, so….
5. There was No RYUK later on!!
6. No deathnote action T_T
7. Misa appeared for like 5 seconds in the movie
8. Some hint of Yaoi between L and Watari (that was what I thought LOL)
9. The part where they made the people die due to the virus outspread was disgusting. The eyes became bloody! So much gore! o.O
10. The little boy, was supposed to be older in person. (Read to the next part to get what I’m talking!)
11. L had no one to protect him
12. The beginning of the movie makes no sense. Or is it me that I’m slow? -.-

What I like about the movie

1. L funny antics (the way he typed!)
2. Near was introduced. The little boy is called Near(at the end of the movie)! Of course in the anime and manga, Near was supposed to be like older -_-
3. L brought Maki(the “little” girl) and Near to a maid cafe!
4. The case in the movie was interesting.
5. I’m just sad that there is no deathnote actionnnnn. =/
6. They keep using the scary “Deathnote” song. YAY!

At the end of the movie, L said to Near “no matter how gifted you are, one alone cannot change the world”.

So true, and remind me why did they call this movie “L: Change the World“? -_-

No doubt that everyone has been waiting for this day for the news to be confirmed!

Zombie-Loan

Genre: Action, Horror, Fantasy
Review: Every person has an invisible ring around his neck. This ring will get darker and darker and he will die once the ring has turned black. Ever since birth Kita Michiru was able to see those rings. She is shocked when she finds out that the rings around Akatsuki Chika’s and Tachibana Shito’s neck, two boys from her school, are pitch black and yet they are still alive. When she gets involved with them she learns that they once died and were given another chance by the Zombie Loan project. She decides to help them to repay their debt by killing zombies.
Undead/horror fans will probably like that show but I have yet to discover any depth or interesting twists in this story; but things like that might as well unfold later on during this show.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (Sayonara Sad Sensei)

Genre: Drama, Comedy, School
Review: On a sunny spring day under blooming sakura trees a fateful meeting between Fuura, a girl who can only see everything in a positive light, and Nozomu, a teacher who can only see everything in a negative light, takes place. In fact Nozomu is highly depressive and is trying to kill himself at this very moment, once again. Fuura “helps” him out of his pitiful situation and nicknames him Pink Supervisor. How will those 2 complete opposite character get along in the future.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is presented with very unique artwork. It is the completely hilarious story of Nozomu, who is constantly trying to kill himself, and Fuura, who is living in her own bright and happy world. They have whole different ideas of life and ways to interact with others. Having enough problems of his own he still has to deal with the problems of his students as well.

Death Note TV

About Death Note
Light Yagami is an extremely intelligent young man who resents the crime and corruption in the world. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note", lying on the ground in the year 2003. The Death Note's instructions claim that if a human's name is written within it that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the Death Note's authenticity, believing it is just a prank. However, after experimenting with it and killing two criminals, Light is forced to admit that the Death Note is real. After meeting with the previous owner of the Death Note, a shinigami named Ryuk, Light seeks to become "the God of the new world" by passing his judgment on criminals.

Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective known only as "L". L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as "Kira" (derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the word "Killer"), is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and qame of psychological cat and mouse between the two begins.

Death Note History

Death Note (デスノート, Desu Nōto) is a Japanese manga series created by the writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata. The series primarily centers around a high school student who decides to rid the world of evil with the help of a supernatural notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it.

Death Note was first serialized by Shueisha in the Japanese manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump from the first issue in December 2003 to May 2006, with 108 chapters in total. The series has been published in its entirety in 12 tankōbon volumes in Japan and in North America. The series has been adapted into a pair of live-action films released in Japan on June 17, 2006 and November 3, 2006, and an anime series which aired in Japan from October 3, 2006 to June 26, 2007. Mengenal istilah Fansub

More..

However, not all countries are able to enjoy the benefits of this system, leading to widespread resentment and war. ANime Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Overall
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is the story of a young man named Simon and his brother Kamina. Miners by trade, they are drilling around under the repressive rule of the Spiral King. One day, a monster comes in, along with a hot babe rebel named Yoko. She gets Simon and Kamina to join her cause to overthrow the Spiral King.

The story doesn't end there, however. Seven years later, we find out there were reasons behind the Spiral King's malevolence. Even more powerful and sinister is the anti-spiral faction, who kidnap Simon's girlfriend Nia and then force him to return to fighting. With the Dai-Gurren team, Simon journies to another dimension to fight the Anti-Spirals.

Story
Gainax's record with storytelling, as others have noted is a hit-or-miss thing. This time, they hit. A simple story about going from rags to riches to finding one's destiny is exquisitely told. It's also punctuated with humor that enhances it in the right places.
One thing that I had always wondered about the hero-overthrows-opressive-dictator genre I've wondered about was what happens after the dictator was overthrown. This story explains some of that in a marvelous manner. The storyline is quite addictive.

I think once it hits America, it's going into the top 10.
